Smart choices in the pet department
The pet department in the garden centre has become a serious engine of turnover. Sector research shows that dog products account for an average of 48% of turnover, followed by cat products at 22% (source: Dibevo Marktmonitor 2024).
Treats in particular are growing fast: in the first quarter of 2025, sales at garden centres were 18% higher than a year earlier, largely thanks to smart placement at the tills and in seasonal displays. Impulse products pay best in places where the customer slows down, at queues for instance, or at sniffing corners that invite a try.
Food is a constant with a thin margin
By tuning the range to local demand, grain-free food or sustainable brands for instance, you can still achieve a higher turnover per square metre. Several garden centres deliberately play for repeat visits and work with local vets on regular nutrition advice days. That deepens loyalty and encourages upselling.
Positioning determines the range
Choosing the right range demands a clear position. Is your store a family outing, a place for inspiration, or mainly built for quick service? For distinction in the offer, specialised display works. Diet and medical food perform well in a separate consultation corner. For dogs and cats there is also a clear trend towards design products that match the interior at home.
