The new approach to spring: working with themes
Spring in a garden centre never happened by itself, but for years it looked that way. Plants, bedding and garden products sold themselves the moment the first sun appeared. The GfK 2025 survey (source: Tuinbranche Nederland) shows something striking, though: for the first time, Dutch garden centres turn over more in the second half of the year than in the first. Christmas is catching up with spring.
And that is a signal. Christmas has been built for years on worked-out themes, storytelling, atmosphere and complete solutions. Spring usually lags behind on all of that. And that is exactly where the opportunity sits.
From atmosphere to solution
Many garden centres lay out their plant displays as inspiration corners. Attractive, certainly. But to sell, a different approach works better: organise around what the customer is trying to do. Not by plant type, but by concrete situations customers recognise:
- a shady corner of the balcony
- more biodiversity in the garden
- low maintenance
- a terrace that smells good in summer
- a corner that feels finished straight away
Consumers think in mini-projects, not in Latin names. Present each theme as a complete package, with a plant mix, a matching pot, feed, watering and a few short care steps, and buying suddenly becomes much easier. British and Scandinavian retailers have been doing this successfully for years, because they offer it compactly and concretely: take this home and you can start today.

A new way of thinking about spring
If Christmas has grown into a mega-season thanks to worked-out themes, the logical next step is to do the same for spring. Clear themes per display, one promise per theme (“shade-proof”, “carefree terrace”), starter sets that take the work off the customer's hands, and simple explanation in the display itself.
The numbers to steer on are cross-sell from plant to pot and feed, and conversion per display. Both go up when the customer can tell that the thinking has already been done. Spring no longer sells itself. Work as strategically as you do at Christmas and you keep spring as the engine of your year.
